The First Trimester (aka Tri-funk)

My first trimester is coming to a close in three days and I thought I would take a minute to reflect on this exhausting three month period. Even though I am not out of the first trimester yet, I'm starting to feel a heck of a lot better the past week and a half.
Here is some of what I dealt with during this time:

  • Borderline narcolepsy. Seriously, put me on the couch and regardless of the time, I would fall asleep. The mind-boggling thing was that hubs would wake me up, I would go back to my bed and immediately fall asleep again. This is getting better but I still enjoy a nice nap on Saturday afternoon and I still go to bed no later than 8:30pm.
  • A perpetual bad taste in my mouth. Regardless of what I had just eaten or whether or not I had just brushed my teeth, I had a bad taste in my mouth. It is a coppery flavor like I had been sucking on a penny (not that I know what that's like, not like I ever did that when I was seven and my mom caught me and I got in trouble, not like that ever happened). Anyway, the taste would never leave. I still get it for a period of time about once a day, but it does go away.
  • A very sensitve gag reflex. I will begin this one with a disclaimer: I know I am so lucky to never have vomited, as I know many pregnant women spend these months next to the toilet. My problem is that I will gag at just about anything that looks gross or smells gross. There are days when I couldn't get into the pantry to throw stuff away because the trash smelled too bad. Or, my husband and I would just be talking and in the middle of the conversation I would start to gag. I always managed to practice deep breathing and keep myself from throwing up. One day at school in the middle of the pledge, I started to gag. My poor kids stopped dead in their tracks.
  • Crazy food cravings. First it was cherries, then it was Lunchables, then it was Chipotle burritos, now it's eggrolls. Can you see it's getting progressively more unhealthy? Eek, I'll try to work on that.
  • Mommy-brain. I am so freaking forgetful! It's not the best thing either because I am team leader this year and have to disperse a lot of information. I have to write everything down immediately or I will forget. Something tells me that this too will not end with the first trimester.
  • I have to pee all the time. I am also a lot more thirsty than I usually am. I drink a ton of water, and go to the bathroom double. I know, I know, this too will not end with the first trimester, in fact, it will get worse.

On the lucky side, I have not suffered as much as some women do. For that, I feel blessed. For example, I have not vomited, had indigestion, heartburn, or nausea. I am also not constipated (I know, TMI). No swollen joints either.

So, I'm really thankful to be progressing so well in the pregnancy and I hope it continues to be this easy. Even if it doesn't, I am so ecstatic to be carrying this child, I have faith that it will all be worth it in the end.

I love hearing how things are going. I had so many of those same symptoms. My brain problem was that I would lose words in the middle of what I was trying to say and couldn't think of the word I wanted for the life of me!
Our photographer in that pic. actually had that outfit. It was just a long black skirt and a wrap top that tied.

Just yesterday I saw a pregnancy photo where she just wore a little black cardigan and just buttoned like the top 2 buttons. It looked really cute.
